Scholastic Book Fair a Success!

Student’s from Mr. Duffy’s Gr. 4 classroom

This year’s Scholastic Book Fair earned nearly $2000 in profit for our school Library Media program!  This money will add both new books and new furnishings to our Library Media classroom.

The Fair was well attended; our Family Night brought in many families shopping for books to add to both their home libraries and to the classroom libraries in our school.

In addition to the profit earned from the Fair, our school community very generously provided new books to our classrooms via the Book Donation feature of the Fair.  Mr. Duffy’s name was selected from the “Books for Your Classroom” raffle drawing this year.  Above, (4) student representatives from his classroom  selected  books from the Fair to add to Mr. Duffy’s classroom library.

Many thanks to the parent volunteers who donated their time to set up the Fair, work at the Fair, and pack it up at Fair’s end.

SEPAC Grant Awarded to SPS Media Center for Alternative Seating

Exciting news!  The Board of the Tri-town SEPAC has recently granted a request to fund two
Jellyfish Ball Chairs for use by all students in the SPS Media Center.

This grant is a part of a longer-range plan to provide students with more flexible seating and learning options than are presently available in the Media Center .  (For some formulating ideas about this initiative, see Converting the Library to a Learning Center) by Jennifer Gonzalez .

Jellyfish Ball Chairs are ergonomic seats that can reduce squirming and fidgeting.   They are designed to stimulate thinking and allow continuous, non-distracting movement.  Stability ball chairs, like the Jellyfish Ball Chairs, allow purposeful movement to strengthen students’ core muscles while increasing focus on school work.

Each classroom of students who have entered the Media Center this past week immediately noticed the chairs and have asked to try them.

After explaining the purpose of the chairs to students, a plan to allow each student time to experience learning while using the chair was implemented.

Feedback as to how this new seating option impacts students and their learning in the Media Center will be gathered  to determine whether additional seating of this type for the Media Center might be funded in the future.

Summer Reading Program at the Boxford Town Library

imgres

On Thursday, June 9, Josh Kennedy, Children’s Librarian from the Boxford Town Library, visited with our students to tell them about this year’s Summer Reading Program.   Informational fliers went home today with students in Backpack Mail.  All reading time counts, whether it be devouring the latest novel by their favorite author, or even the comics in their grandparent’s daily newspaper!  This perennially popular summer program offers incentives for students to keep up their daily reading habit over the summer months; reading hours count toward some fun prizes and celebrations, including Benson’s ice cream and tickets to the Topsfield Fair in October.

Return Your Library Books, Please!

bookreturncart

All school library books loaned to students are due back before the end of the school year.

In order to facilitate the timely return of books to our library, the last day for students to borrow books from the library will be Friday, May 27th.

Students will be receiving a printout of books checked out under their library accounts the first week of June.  Be sure to look for it in BackPack Mail!

Homeroom teachers will also be given a copy of student book loan reports in order to facilitate in the timely return of library books.

You can help your student  by checking in all of the usual, as well as the UNUSUAL places a book may be!  The car?  The vacation house?  Between the bedroom wall and the bed (a very common place for library books to “hide out”.  ; )

Book Club

Book Club

The Spofford Pond School Book Club is a perennially popular PTA program.  Spofford familibookclubes may choose to honor a special event in their member’s lives, such as a child’s birthday, by donating a book to our school library. You may hear the program referred to as the “Birthday Book Club”, as most of the donations we receive are in honor of students’ birthdays; however, we have received donations in honor of milestones in a student’s reading achievement, or, as another example, in honor of a grandparent’s love of children’s literature.

Every few months, a letter will go home to students whose birthdays are approaching, to remind families of this program, including specific instructions as to how our program works.  Should you wish to donate a book in honor of something other than a student’s  birthday, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will provide a donation form for you.  bboulay@boxfordschools.orgWe are so grateful that the Book Club program has consistently generated over $1000 a year in income in which to purchase many new books that our students are most interested in reading.

Seeing a bookplate with their name and and special message in the first page of a new library book is very exciting to Spofford Pond students.

The entire Spofford Pond School community is encouraged to suggest books to purchase for our Book Club book selection cart.  There are so many books being published each and every day, that it literally takes a village to create and maintain a relevant and inspiring lending collection on our library shelves.

Please email us here at the library to find out more about this PTO sponsored program.  bboulay@boxfordschools.org

We will see that all of your inquiries are forwarded to our PTO Book Club volunteer.
